The media reported that it would allow New Yorkers to turn corpses into compost after death.
Environmentalists say this is more environmentally friendly than burial or cremation.
In this method, called natural biodegradation, human corpses are digested by placing them in a container for several weeks.
The state of New York is the sixth state to allow the composting of corpses in this way, and earlier in the states of Colorado, California, and Oregon, it was also approved to turn corpses into compost.
